Goals of the program:
- provide meaningful employment opportunities to underemployed and unemployed individuals, primarily in Detroit
- create equality in accessing green jobs and creating green businesses for Detroit residents
- expand opportunities for local businesses in green and brownfield industries through a highly skilled and trained Detroit-based workforce
- transform the lives and communities of Detroit through sustainable, environmentally just and green job practices.
During a 4 week training course, program participants receive Department of Labor Distance Learning training for :
- HAZWOPER certification
- Construction
- Weatherization
During a state-certified, 10-16 week training course, program participants receive training for:
- HAZWOPER certification
- Lead Worker certification
- Asbestos Worker certification
- OSHA 10hr workplace card
- Confined Space entry
- Mold Remediation
- Phase I/Phase II environmental site assessments
- First Aid/CPR
- Fall Training
The training course may also include the following Green Tracks:
- Energy Audits/Retrofitting: Energy audits are a process of evaluating a system (such as a building) to understand its energy use. Retrofitting is adding new technology or features to an existing building to make it more energy efficient.
- Computer Aided Design (CAD): CAD is the use of computer technology to aid in the design and especially the drafting (technical/engineering drawings) of a part or product, including entire buildings
- Deconstruction: Deconstruction is the selective dismantlement of building components, specifically for reusing, recycling and reducing waste. It is a way of salvaging all of the value in a building that is to be taken down.
- Geothermal Systems: Ground source heat pumps use the natural warmth of the earth to heat and cool your building.
- Green Landscaping: Green landscaping is a way of designing and maintaining beautiful yards, gardens, and larger areas to:
* reduce harm to the environment
* save time and $ with lower maintenance
* have healthier places to work and play - Phase I/Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (intro and sampling methods): Phase I assesses the potential for environmental contamination and history of a site. Phase II specifically focuses on obtaining sampling information for contamination.
- Phytoremediation: Phytoremediation uses natural properties of plants in engineered systems to remove pollutants from soil, water and air.
